Master the Light: How to Use the Adjustment Tool

Adjust lighting in easy steps.

1

Choose Your Photo Source

Upload the image you want to enhance. We recommend using the highest resolution source possible for the best final results.

2

Assess the Base Exposure

Look at the initial image. Is it too dark? Too flat? Identify which slider should be your primary focus (Brightness for light, Contrast for pop).

3

Apply Lighting Adjustments

Gradually move the Brightness slider to move the pixel luminosity. Aim for a level where details in the shadows are visible but highlights aren't blinding.

4

Calibrate the Contrast

Increase the Contrast slider to separate the light and dark areas. This will add 'impact' and 'sharpness' to the overall visual.

5

Final Visual Check

Review the preview. Toggle the sliders back and forth slightly to ensure you haven't over-corrected. A natural look is usually the best look.

Exposure Knowledge Base: Luminance Adjustment FAQ

Will brightening an image make it look 'noisy'?
If an image is extremely dark, brightening it can reveal existing sensor noise. Our tool applies the change smoothly to minimize this effect.
What happens if I turn contrast all the way up?
The image will become very 'harsh,' with many pixels turning pure white or pure black. This is usually only done for specific artistic effects.
Can I fix a photo that is completely white (overexposed)?
If the data is completely 'clipped' to white, lowering brightness won't bring it back. However, for most images, we can recover significant detail.
Which should I adjust first: Brightness or Contrast?
Generally, fix the brightness (exposure) first so you can see the colors, then adjust contrast to add the desired impact and depth.
Does this tool work on logos with transparent backgrounds?
Yes! The adjustment will only affect the colored pixels of the logo, leaving the transparent background exactly as it was.
Is there a charge for high-resolution photo edits?
No. Our tools are completely free to use for any resolution because the processing happens on your own computer.
Will my colors change when I adjust contrast?
Contrast can sometimes make colors feel more 'saturated' because the darker shades become deeper. This is usually a desired professional effect.
Can I use this for photos taken in RAW format?
You'll need to use our RAW to JPG tool first to 'develop' the file, then use this tool for final artistic lighting tweaks.
How do I know my photos are safe?
Privacy is baked into our system architecture. The math for the lighting adjustment happens via your browser's JavaScript engine, so the image data stays local.
Does it work on tablet and mobile browsers?
Yes! The responsive design and touch-friendly sliders make it easy to edit photos directly from your phone's gallery.
