Understanding Stripe Payment Processing Fees

Stripe is one of the world's leading payment processing platforms, powering millions of businesses from startups to Fortune 500 companies. Stripe charges a per-transaction fee consisting of a percentage of the transaction amount plus a fixed fee. The standard US rate for domestic card payments is 2.9% + $0.30, but rates vary based on card type, whether the transaction is domestic or international, and the payment method used. For businesses processing significant volumes, Stripe offers custom pricing. Our calculator helps you understand exactly how much Stripe will charge for each transaction and, crucially, how much to charge your customers if you want to receive a specific net amount after fees.

Stripe Fee Tiers Explained

Standard Online Payments

2.9% + $0.30 per successful card charge for domestic US cards. This is the default rate for most online businesses accepting Visa, Mastercard, and Discover.

International Cards

3.9% + $0.30 for cards issued outside the US. An additional 1% fee applies for currency conversion if the charge is in a non-USD currency.

In-Person Payments

2.6% + $0.10 per tap, dip, or swipe using Stripe Terminal. The lower rate reflects the reduced fraud risk of card-present transactions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Stripe cheaper than PayPal?
For standard domestic transactions, Stripe (2.9% + $0.30) is slightly cheaper than PayPal (2.99% + $0.49). The difference is more significant on smaller transactions due to PayPal's higher fixed fee. For in-person payments, Stripe Terminal (2.6% + $0.10) is very competitive.
Does Stripe charge monthly fees?
No, Stripe has no monthly fees, setup fees, or hidden charges. You only pay per-transaction fees. This makes it ideal for small businesses and startups with unpredictable revenue. Stripe does offer premium products (Stripe Tax, Radar for Fraud Detection) with additional costs.
Can I pass Stripe fees to my customers?
Yes, this practice is called 'surcharging' and is legal in most US states (except Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, and Puerto Rico). You can use our 'I Want to Receive' mode to calculate the exact amount to charge. However, some card networks have specific rules about surcharging.
